Brief – Day 2

See Day 1 and Day 3 for more details. Return to Winter Escape to Craig’s details.

Day 2 – approximately 12.50km
Time on track – approximately 9 hours including breaks

Oh yes, it is hard to crawl out of a cosy tent into a frosty winter morning, but the adventure awaiting you is definitely worth it, as today’s destination is Craig’s Hut.

There is no need to pack up camp. We will return to the same campsite at the end of the day.
Pack your daypack and head to the hut for breakfast.

Departing from the camp around 8:00am, you will head towards the summit of Mt Stirling along a trail with stunning views of the summit and of Mt Buller, before leaving the groomed cross country ski trails for a real backcountry adventure. You will travel amongst Snow Gums, up and down unmaintained trails that during this time of year are usually covered in deep untouched snow.

When you arrive at Craig’s Hut, you will have ample time to explore this high country icon and its surrounds. This place is gorgeous any time of year and in any weather, but it’s absolutely magical when covered in a white blanket of snow.
After lunch, you will retrace your steps back to camp, arriving just in time to settle in the warmth of the hut for dinner.

Summiting Mt Stirling will depend on the weather.
If it’s a nice day on Day 2, you will summit on the way to Craig’s Hut. This will mean however, that you’ll need to leave the camp about one hour earlier.
If the weather is looking better for the next day, you will summit on Day 3 on the way back to Telephone Box Junction.
NOTE: Though we do our best to take our clients to the summit, it’s not always possible due to the weather.

Elevation at highest point: approx. 1686m ASL (1750m via summit)
Total ascent: approx. 678m (742m via summit)
Total descent: approx. 678m (742m via summit)
