The day prior to the start of the tour – briefing session at 6:00pm at Merrijig Motor Inn.

Day 1 – approximately 11.6km (challenging – hard)
Time on track – approximately 9 hours including breaks

Meet at the Merrijig Motor Inn car park at 6:15am for a 6:30am departure.

Travel approximately 1 hour to the start of the track. Most of the drive is on an unsealed road.

Day 1 starts along a disused 4WD track heading up Mt Thorn. This track, overgrown in places, will challenge you with some steep sections before you reach a little forest clearing where you will enjoy a short, well deserved break.

Following an undefined track to the summit of Mt Thorn you will truly take the track less travelled.                          Views of the surrounding peaks will slowly come into view and it will be time to find a nice spot to settle down for lunch.

With lunch done and dusted, you will continue following the ridge line over the Thorn Range where you will enjoy magnificent views of Mt Buller, The Bluff, Mt Magdala and many other towering peaks of the Victorian High Country, before dropping down on to another disused 4WD track.

After another short break you will embarking on the hardest section of the day, a steep ascent to your overnight camp site. You will be tired, so it is important to take extra care.

Once your camp is set and dinner is cooked, it will be time to relax with a view of the North side of Mt Howitt.

Elevation at highest point: approx. 1474m ASL
