Brief – 1 Day
The day prior to the start of the tour – briefing session at 6:00pm at Merrijig High Country Hotel.
Day 1 – approximately 6.1km (easy – moderate)
Time on track – approximately 3 hours including breaks
Meet at the Merrijig High Country Hotel car park at 9:15am for a 9:30am departure.
Travel approximately 1 hour to the start of the track. Most of the drive is on an unsealed road with a very short section on a 4WD track crossing a small creek.
You will be hiking along a narrow track that winds along the Howqua River all the way to Ritchie’s Hut. The track is on a steep bank up high above the river providing stunning views of the river below and the surrounding peaks, before entering a beautiful forest and descending down to the river.
Ritchie’s Hut roof will come into view through the trees and soon after, a single creek crossing will pop you up by one of the more beautiful huts of the Victorian High Country.
Your lunch stop will be before entering the forest, so that you can keep soaking up the views while enjoying your meal.
Set up camp and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the hut and it’s surrounds. Take a dip in the Howqua River, read a book or just simply BREATHE IN THE HIGH COUNTRY AND EXHALE THE EXPERIENCE.
