Time on track – approximately 9 hours including stops and breaks

Depart Merrijig at 7:00am from our meeting point in Merrijig Motor Inn car park (be at departure point 15 minutes prior).
Travel approximately 15 minutes to Mirimbah Park.
Get ready and start walking at 8:00am.

Day 1 starts on a track that follows the Delatite River into the mountains. There are numerous river crossings, but don’t worry, the single log bridges will keep your feet dry. This is a very enjoyable walk along the river. The track is surrounded by lush ferns and tall trees. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as deer and wallabies that come to drink from the river and if you are lucky, you might even spot a trout. You will have a short break just before the last river crossing where the track starts to climb towards Circuit Road. The track to Circuit Road continues through beautiful forest of tall trees that provide welcome shade on warm days. The accent is not steep or difficult, but it is continuous.

After lunch break at Circuit Road, you will continue up the River Spur Trail to the summit of Mt Stirling. During winter, the River Spur Trail is used as a cross country ski trail. It is a continuous climb with some steeper sections, but it is a very enjoyable walk amongst snow gums. Reaching the summit of Mt Stirling will be the highlight of the day. The summit is treeless and offers 360 degree views. After spending bit of time on the summit, it will be time to set up camp, cook some dinner and wind down for the day.

The first day is quiet challenging as you will gain approximately 900m in elevation, but it is very rewarding. Be ready for a long day.

Elevation at highest point: approx. 1764m ASL
Total ascent: approx. 910m
Total descent: approx. 15m
