Day 4 – 19.5km (moderate – challenging)
Time on track – approximately 9 hours 30 minutes including stops and breaks

Day 4 will see you depart camp at 8:00am. The first section will take you down from Mt Cobbler to Speculation Road. This is a lovely fun section on a narrow walking track. Some parts might be slightly overgrown and you need to watch your step because of rocks and tree roots, but it all adds to the adventure. Once you reach Speculation Road, you will keep heading downhill to King Hut. This section is on a 4WD track and can get bit tiring especially on your feet as you will be walking downhill on a hard surface all the way to King Hut. However, the forest you are surrounded with is very beautiful and you should always keep your eye out for wildlife. There is a good chance that you will encounter the occasional 4WD or a motorcycle on this track, so keep to the side of the road where possible and listen for the sound of an engine.

After a nice lunch break at King Hut, you will cross the King River and head uphill to Craig’s Hut. No, there is no bridge across the river. It is shoes off and time to soak your feet. After three and half days of hiking, they will love you for it.

From here it is all uphill along another 4WD track. This track is not busy with cars and motorcycles. The first couple of kilometres are steep, after that it eases off a little, but be prepared for a full-on uphill afternoon.

Today is a long and challenging day and arriving at Craig’s Hut is a true reward. Craig’s Hut was built especially for the film The Man from Snowy River in 1981 and named after the lead actor, Jim Craig, played by Tom Burlinson. The hut standing today is the 4th version. Version 3 burnt down by wild fire on 11 December 2006 and the hut was again rebuilt in 2007. The original hut was a set only and had no floor. It has been replaced with a more robust version as it became popular with visitors. Craig’s Hut is one of Victoria’s most iconic places to visit and it is here where you will be able to look at the chain of mountains you crossed over the last four days from Mt Howitt, over The Crosscut, across Mt Buggary to Mt Speculation and on to Mt Cobbler. It’s an amazing view and an incredible feeling to look back over the area you have placed your feet one by one to get to this point.

After setting up camp you will have time to explore Craig’s Hut and its immediate surrounds.
