Brief – 1 Day
The day prior to the start of the tour – briefing session at 7:00pm at Merrijig Motor Inn.
Day 1 – 5.5km (easy – moderate)
Time on track – approximately 3 hours including stops and breaks
Depart Merrijig at 8:30am from our meeting point in Merrijig Motor Inn car park (be at departure point 15 minutes prior).
Travel approximately 1 hour to Eight Mile Flat passing through the famous Sheepyard Flat in the Howqua Hills Historic Area. Most of the drive is on an unsealed road with a very short section on a 4WD track crossing a small creek.
Get ready and start walking at 10:00am.
Today’s walk is along a narrow walking track that runs along the Howqua River all the way to Ritchie’s Hut. This track is gently undulating and runs through beautiful bushland higher up the South bank of Howqua River. After about 3.5km the track will gently lead you down into the forest and right on to the riverbank. In no time at all, you will cross a creek and find yourself standing in front of one of the more beautiful huts of the Victorian High Country.
On arrival at the hut, you can relax and enjoy your lunch before setting up the camp. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to enjoy. You can take a dip in the Howqua River or read a book or just simply relax.
This is an easy, beautiful walk that any hiker will enjoy.
