Brief – Day 1

See Day 2 for more details.  Return to Iconic Craig’s Hut details.

The day prior to the start of the tour – briefing session at 7:00pm at Merrijig Motor Inn.

Day 1 – 9.2km (moderate – challenging)
Time on track – approximately 6 hours including stops and breaks

Depart Merrijig at 8:15am from our meeting point in Merrijig Motor Inn car park (be at departure point 15 minutes prior).
Travel approximately 20 minutes to Telephone Box Junction at Mt Stirling.
Get ready and start walking at 9:15am.

The morning part of the walk is uphill along one of Mt Stirling cross country ski trails with a short steep section just before the summit. It’s a beautiful walk through Alpine Ash forest that at about 1400m elevation changes to sub-alpine woodland of mostly Snow Gums. After a short break at Bluff Spur Hut that is surrounded by beautiful old Snow Gums, you will continue above the tree line to the (dome shape) summit of Mt Stirling. The 360 degree views from the summit are well worth the short steep climb. After soaking in the fantastic view, it will be time for lunch.

The afternoon will see you descend from Mt Stirling along a 4WD track to Monument Saddle, then head up to The Monument where you will take a short break before descending on the other side towards Clear Hills. This track leads through beautiful woodland of Snow Gums with some short steep descents. The last push to Clear Hills and Craig’s Hut is up a short gentle slope.

The 4WD track is not busy with traffic. However, it is important to keep your ears tuned for any engine noise and step to the side if you hear/see cars or motorbikes approaching.
After setting up camp, you will be able to explore Craig’s Hut with its surrounds and enjoy the views towards King Valley and of the surrounding hills, Mt Cobbler, Mt Speculation, Mt Buggery, The Crosscut Saw, Mt Howitt, Mt Magdala, just to name a few.

Elevation at highest point: approx. 1750m ASL
Total ascent: approx. 590m
Total descent: approx. 170m
